Heads Roll in Today's Headline!
Today, January 21 1793, an event that will shape the world as we know it took place at Place Louis XV. The tyrannical king Louis XVI met his bitter end today by the blade of the guillotine. Surely this is not a surprise to many of you, but for the purpose of education I will recount the events that led to the end of an awful man and an awful era. Since the early 1790's Louis attitude towards our National Assembly had been very hostile, and this aroused even more discontent with his already disastrous rule. Many were trying to push our country away from the old ways, and in 1791 Louis was caught trying to flee from France to gather support and backup to re-establish the old ways. Brought back to France, distrust ran even higher. After the attacks on Tuileres on August 1oth, 1792, we saw the fall of the monarchy that we had lived under for so long. Louis was imprisoned. In a near unanimous vote, he was charged with high treason, and the majority voted for him to be sentenced to death. There was much confusion and riotous behavior at the execution today, but one event that stands out was the speech Louis gave before the people. Striding confidently to the center of the platform he spoke "I die innocent of all the crimes laid to my charge; I Pardon those who have occasioned my death; and I pray to God that the blood you are going to shed may never be visited on France" This was followed by an uproar from the crowd, followed by the end of Louis XVI. Though there is still uncertainty in the matter, we have heard rumors here that Marie Antoinette, his wife, is going to meet a similar fate later this year. Keep up with this paper for the latest news.
